The 2026 Mac Masterclass: Ryujinx on Apple Silicon
Blog post description.
MAC

If If you own a MacBook or an iMac with an M-series chip, you are sitting on one of the best emulation machines in existence. Because the Switch and Apple Silicon both use the ARM architecture, Ryujinx doesn't have to "translate" the game's brain—it just lets it run.
This guide will show you how to unlock 60 FPS and 4K visuals on your Mac while keeping your fans quiet.
1. Requirements for macOS
Ryujinx supports both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, but the experience is night and day:
Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4): Highly recommended. These chips use the Hypervisor framework for near-native speeds.
Intel Macs: Supported via AMD or Intel GPUs, but you will need to use Vulkan and expect higher temperatures.
OS Version: macOS 14 (Sonoma) or the new macOS 16/17 is required for the latest Metal shader support.
2. Installation & Permissions
Download the DMG: Get the latest Ryujinx macOS build from our download section.
Drag to Applications: Open the .dmg and drag the Ryujinx icon into your Applications folder.
Bypass Gatekeeper: Since this is an emulator, macOS might say it's from an "unidentified developer."
Right-click the app and select Open.
Alternatively, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security and click "Open Anyway" at the bottom.
3. Setup: Keys & Firmware
Ryujinx needs the identity of a real Switch to boot.
Keys: Open Ryujinx, go to the top menu: File > Open Ryujinx Folder. Drop your prod.keys into the system folder.
Firmware: Go to Tools > Install Firmware. Choose your firmware .zip or .xci. Without this, your Miis will have no faces and your system text will be broken.
4. The "Apple Secret": Hypervisor vs. JIT
This is the most important setting for Mac users. Go to Options > Settings > CPU:
Enable Hypervisor: ALWAYS keep this checked on M-series Macs. It allows the game to run at 99% native speed.
Memory Manager Mode: Set to Host unchecked. This is the most stable setting for macOS 15+.
Note: If a specific game (like Zelda) crashes on startup, try switching to Software JIT temporarily, though performance will drop.
5. Graphics & The "Metal" Backend
Macs don't use DirectX or Vulkan natively; they use Metal.
Graphics Backend: Ryujinx uses a specialized Vulkan-to-Metal translation. Keep this on Vulkan.
Resolution Scaling:
MacBook Air (M1/M2): Keep at 1x (720p/1080p).
MacBook Pro (M3/M4 Max): Crank this to 2x or 3x. The Retina display makes these games look like a native Mac app.
Shader Cache: On the first play, you might see small stutters. This is macOS building "Metal Shaders." Once they are built, the game will be silky smooth.
